The siting methodology was developed through a $500,000 tailored-collaboration project co-funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, Georgia Transmission Corporation and Photo Science.
Preeminent scientists and statisticians, and more than 200 participants from government agencies, utilities, environmental groups and neighborhood organizations took part in the research and development.
The siting methodology earned GTC the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) 2006 Cooperative Innovators Award.
It has been real-world tested on more than two hundred miles of transmission lines.
It has been praised by the Kentucky Public Service Commission. After turning down previous requests, the Kentucky Public Service Commission approved an East Kentucky transmission line project using the EPRI-GTC methodology.
It has been featured at utility conferences and in major trade publications such as Transmission & Distribution World, GeoWorld and Electric Transmission Week.
