Locating Power Lines

Before power poles start arriving at a construction site, at least three to seven years of work will have been completed by hundreds of people. Local EMCs will have been involved with forecasting and planning, our planners will have reviewed plans with the other utilities in Georgia’s Integrated Transmission System and potential corridors will have been evaluated with one of the most advanced siting models available. In addition, environmental studies will have been completed, elected officials will have been consulted, public meetings will have been held and negotiations with property owners to purchase easements and determine final building plans will have been completed. Below are the major steps for building a transmission line.

Steps for building a new transmission line

1. Electrical needs identified and electric alternatives evaluated      2. Area studied for land use, environmental, engineering and construction factors      3. Potential corridors studied to determine a preferred route      4. Elected officials and landowners informed; public meetings held      5. Landowners contacted to arrange on-site surveys; environmental studies performed      6. Preferred route reevaluated based on surveying results and community input      7. Line route and design finalized       8. Easements and other property rights obtained through negotiation      9. Facilities constructed
